Dementia is a broad term which covers the many progressive conditions that affect the function of the brain. In fact there are over 200 subtypes of dementia- Alzheimer’s, Lewy body and vascular being three of the most common.

Symptoms include confusion, memory loss, and issues with speech and language.  Dementia is more common in people over 65 and symptoms progress at different rates. By 2025 over 1 million people in the UK will be living with dementia.  There are many risk factors associated with Dementia including diabetes, thyroid issues, high blood pressure, high alcohol intake. Many of these are modifiable.

The dementia screen will ensure all modifiable risk factors are addressed and reviewed.


  • STEP 1: You will have an examination, full physical health screen, relevant blood tests observations and lifestyle review
  • STEP 2: Memory, Speech, and neurological testing
  • STEP 3: Imaging – specialist dementia screening  (if required)


All patients will have STEP I +2, but only those with positive findings will move onto step 3.

Dementia Screening

Steps 1 and 2 can be carried out in half a day but Step 3 will take longer depending on what is requested. Results for stage 1+2 will be available in 24 hours and the doctor will talk through the findings directly. Follow up is key.

The doctor will also discuss the many options to reduce the long term risk of dementia including lifestyle, diet, exercise, medication, supplements etc.
